On the 5th of November families in Britain let off fireworks to celebrate the capture in the 17th century of a group led by Guy Fawkes who had put gunpowder in the basement of Parliament to blow up the King. The 5th of each month is also the day we remember Knut's birthday. He hated loud noises like thunder and fireworks. His first thunderstorm in Berlin was the first time we saw the normally brave Knut show fear. I still cannot forget how full those 4 years from Christmas 2006 to early 2011 were made because of Knut. Also in the years since how much I have gained from following his fellow Polar Bears in Zoos and in the wild. Many knugs to any who still look here. I miss your photos. ralph

This weekend Germany remembers the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. I had been in Berlin in 1961 as a five year old boy with my parents a month before the wall was built. In 1989 I was actually in the room as Schabowski read from his famous note. The rest of that evening was history. Tosca Knuts mother would find herself in Zoo Berlin after a long journey from Canada via the GDR State Circus. Lars Knuts father was born in Neumunster in West Germany. In 2006 their son Knut was born in a city open to the world. Visitors could also visit Aika whose son Bjorn Heinrich was the previous little Polar cub born in the still divided city. Few people on that exciting nighr in 1989 could have imagined that similar crowds of people and tv crews would gather in the city to see a liittle white bear. Sadly the hopes of both 1989 and Knut were not fulfiled and the world remains a dangerous place for both humans and Polar Bears. But images keep hope alive. Balloons this weekend remember the spirit of 1989.
Harrods is wie Kadewe in Berlin. Ich waere so gern dort. Mother Ursula ist wohlauf
danke für deine wunderschönen Collagen zu Knuts 8. Geburtstag. Schade, dass du dieses Jahr nicht in Berlin sein kannst, aber wir werden sicher an dich denken, wenn wir zusammensitzen.
