Ein Bericht von Mervi in 'KWM' über Ranzos bevorstehende lange Reise nach Wien / Tiergarten Schönbrunn
It’s going to be a long trip for Ranzo
ZitatThe young male polar bear Ranzo has attracted many admirers to the Ranua Wildlife Park in Lapland, as he was the first polar bear cub born in captivity in Finland to have survived to adulthood. As Ranzo moves on to the Vienna Zoo, the park has got its fingers crossed that a new cub will be born later this year...
Ranzo ist gestern auf seine lange Reise nach Wien gegangen...
ZitatThe 2,5 year old polar bear boy Ranzo, the subject of pride for the whole Ranua Wildlife Park, started his journey towards the Vienna Zoo in Austria today. In addition of a brand-new polar bear fencing waiting for Ranzo at the zoo, he will also be joined by a young female polar bear in the same fencing.
Transporting a polar bear is not a simple matter; a professional, specialized in transporting wild animals, is needed to perform the task, and this time the appropriate person was found in Germany. Before the journey can get started, the animal has to be safely moved into a container. Thus Ranzo had to be anesthetized, and first when he’d fallen asleep, was he moved while resting on a heavy canvas, by several men into the container. At some point during the move he was given a microchip implant under his skin for later identification, as well as a parasiticidal injection. When the huge polar bear weighing 300 kg was finally safely in its container, the veterinary surgeon gave him an injection to wake him up. The hatch of the container was then tightly closed and secured by bolts. And first when Ranzo had woken up, could the journey towards his new home, at last, begin.
