Polar Bear Update - Haley

We are still patiently waiting for Haley (6) and the possible cub(s). We have been watching Haley very closely for two months and have done everything we can think of to make her comfortable for a possible birth. Since polar bears typically den up in Mid-October and give birth in November – January, we moved Haley to a new exhibit by herself at the beginning of October. We made a few modifications to the former Black Bear exhibit and inside dens to make her more comfortable and to help us better monitor her. Several cameras have been installed as well as a microphone so we can watch and listen but still give Haley the privacy she needs.

We do expect Haley to give us a few ‘signs’ before she gives birth such as decrease in appetite, mammary development and/or behavioral changes so we are watching her very closely for anything different. Overall, Haley is doing well in her new exhibit and indoor area. She loves all the extra straw we are providing for nesting material! She does have access to her outdoor exhibit as well as the inside den area during the day so if you don’t see her on exhibit, she is probably more comfortable staying inside at that time. We’re all about making Haley happy and comfortable!
